Helmet Laws in Michigan
Recent Changes to Michigan Helmet Laws
In Michigan, bikers have long been required to wear a helmet. This has led to lower fatality rates in motorcycle accidents. Recently, however, these laws have been altered to allow some exceptions.
The mandatory helmet law has been repealed, which means motorcyclists may now ride without a helmet?if they meet certain stipulations. To be exempt from helmet requirements, you must:
- Be at least 21 years of age, and
- Have had your motorcycle endorsement for at least two years; or
- Pass a motorcycle safety course.
Insurance Requirements for the “No Helmet” Allowance
In order to ride without a helmet, you must also have at least $20,000 worth of insurance benefits for the first-party, payable if you should become involved in a motorcycle accident. In order for a passenger to qualify for the “no helmet” allowance, he or she must also be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of $20,000 insurance for themselves (separate from the operator).
If you do not meet all of these conditions, then you must wear a helmet to legally ride a motorcycle in the state of Michigan. Failure to do so could result in being ticketed by law enforcement.
